Avril Lavigne, the spoiled brat

I have to admit that once upon a time I really liked Avril's music and considering I'm a sucker for the Punk genre I also liked the attitude she was selling her music with. But I haven't been blind to the reports over the years about her behaviour, earlier I just blew it off as immature but considering she now is over 23 that can't really be done any more.

I recently read an article in the Globe and Mail about her that is well funny. It is a well written piece about her as a person and quite frankly I'm a bit surprised that the kids are still interested in defending her behaviour. It's one thing to kick the media, the industry and what ever else kind of establishment with some sort of power over things but to sign your autograph as eff you and spit and scream at your fans is just not acceptable. It's not cool, it's not rock and roll and it's not fucking funny. If you can't be nice to your fans, the very people that made your life what it is, then you don't deserve what you have. What you do deserve though is empty arenas, people trashing you all over the internet, no more sold albums and nobody shouting your name (since she apparently thinks that's cool).

So Avril, go fuck yourself will you. You once had a chance to be somebody but now you are just a fucking brat that deserve all the shit that you get.

I think Avril is great. John Doyle is a critic and he puts people down all the time. No matter what you or anyone else says about her she has millions of fan that are dedicated to her and love her and will continue to do so. Like it or not she will be around for very long time because she is talented and never lip-syncs like so many other so called artists do. Regardless of what the press, you or anyone else says about Avril, she is very dedicated to her fans and goes out her way to be nice to them and it is the reason she is so beloved by millions; both young and old. Avril has more fan-based websites dedicated to her than any other artist in the world.

A few reasons why I think Avril will be around log after 10 years...

Many of Avril’s peers have had a leg up from being in the on Disney show or had some other vehicle that has given them a built in audience. Avril has had to earn everything she has accomplished. Avril is incredibly talented and I believe she has long term staying power over her peers, I think Avril will be in the music industry long past ten years, she was born to sing and there is no one else quite like her, the clones keep trying to copy her but in the end most will fade away. Avril is just getting started.

It appears that a few other people in the music industry feel the same way, but don’t take my word for it read what a few music moguls and others have to say about Avrils future, see what they say below about Avril. Most of the content below is direct quotes from articles I have read, with minor paraphrasing.

Lavigne's influence in the pop world has been vast. “Avril came out of nowhere and was such a huge phenomenon that it would be impossible for there not to be a kind of ripple effect,” says MuchMusic reporter Hannah Sung. “I think she has influenced a lot of people who are in the pop biz, and the tastes of a lot of young people as well.”

Teenage angst is healthy and there's always a model of that happening in pop culture, Avril fills a certain portion of that void, Avril has an edge to her music, but there is a note of honesty in her music and that's why it connected. No matter how much L.A. Reid tries to primp you, you can't be a success unless there's something real in there. “I believe in Avril Lavigne's power, for sure.”

Larry LeBlanc, bureau chief for Billboard magazine in Canada comes to Lavigne's defense. ``Everybody underestimates Avril, and they shouldn't,'' LeBlanc says. ``Avril didn't start like (her imitators). She wasn't a Disney doll. When she came out, she was positioned differently. She was like the girl in grade 10 sitting in the back of the class at 3:10, waiting for the bell to ring, going `I am so f--king bored.' Every small town has a bunch of Avril Lavigne’s. She was the quintessential Canadian kid from a small town. I think that was her appeal.''

LeBlanc he sees her as a fiercely independent spirit whose persona has been genuine. “She's a pint-sized whirlwind,”' he says. “She's had her own look, her own viewpoint. She's been anti-star in a lot of ways. Hilary Duff will sit there for four hours and talk to the press. Avril will walk by and say ‘Screw you.’ The others are products of the Hollywood star-making machine. Avril's not a part of that. . . . There's nobody like her within spitting distance.''

However Avril evolves, Lavigne has something that her clones do not have, as LeBlanc sees it, and that's staying power. She needs to “earn her stripes,” LeBlanc says, and record an album that will win her real credibility in the rock world, much like Alanis Morissette did when she graduated from being a teen pop artist to recording the acclaimed Jagged Little Pill.

Lavigne herself is determined to be around for the long haul. Last year she told the Los Angeles Times that she plans to take her time recording her third album. She wants to grow as an artist, she says, and she has no interest in rehashing her first two records. “I see people that have been around for a while, and I can really appreciate their staying power,” she said. “Look at Green Day. They waited five years to come out with a record, and it's a smash hit. Or Madonna, who's a mother now but still a vital artist. I really respect that ability to sustain a career over a long period of time.”

Is Lavigne capable of such progress? LeBlanc has faith she's here to stay. "You'll see the others fade away," he says. “Avril Lavigne won't fade away.”

I don't accuse her of being a plastic doll created by music studio producers (because she isn't). I do however accuse her of having a bad attitude towards her fans, since that was the whole point of John Doyle's article.

My point is also that I'd welcome an artist with of Avril's stature to have an attitude towards the establishment because I think it's needed (again). But to have an attitude towards her fans is a very bad idea and will only work against her.

Bottom line is that I enjoy her music and would very much like to keep listening to her music but when I keep reading reports about how she has mistreated her fans it pisses me off, to be quite honest.

Although its true Avril has made a few mistakes when dealing with the paparazzi, but most all the other stuff people have been saying that Avril has been dissing her fan is just not true. I think the whole lawsuit thing has made Avril and easy target and there has been an overwhelming amount of made-up and false negative press about Avril, saying that she disrespects her fans, etc. But I say you just can't believe all of the negative stuff the press and many bloggers are saying about Avril. I have friend who witnessed Avril sign autographs for fans for nearly two hours before the show in Mexico, Yet the press reported that Avril was mean to her fans in Mexico, My friend who was there said that Avril went out of her way to be really nice to her fans, so what gives?

Then another friend said the following after a different Avril concert:
“So after the show, my friend and I made it out back behind the venue where the artist usually come out. (I've been to this place a ton) We were the first people to show up and just wait against the fence. Since it wasn't a tour, there were no busses. Just transportation vans. 45 minutes past before I realized there was a crowd of about 50 people. It was cool. A few minutes later, out comes Avril headed towards the van. We all started screaming, trying to get her attention and it worked! Then she started making her way towards us. She started signing for everybody there. I got her to sign my ticket. She was super nice. This one girl brought her guitar to get signed. Then she asked Avril if she could sign it, she goes "Sure! That rocks!" She was chill about it. What I thought was cool was her body guard was all, "Hey we gotta go now" She replied with "Uh no wait. Did I sign for everybody?" A couple of girls replied with "No" so she proceeded to sign until she got every single person that was there. It was a cool experience. I got a change to ask when she's coming back. She said expect the tour to kick off early in 2008. Awesome!”

I think right now Avril is the subject of a lot of undeserved negative press right now, and she is caught in this current trend of putting down celebrities, I guess because it sell better than the actual boring truth.

I just don't believe that Avril is someone who thinks she is better that anyone else, if she did why would she be so involved in donating some much of her time supporting charities and worthy causes like Make a wish foundation, Unicef, British-based children’s charity Amnesty International, HEART, Keep A Child, Alive, Make-A-Wish Foundation, MusiCares, Prince's Trust, Toy Mountain Campaign, US Campaign for Burma, YouthAIDS, to name a few that Avril is involved with, etc., are these efforts the kind of things that someone does if don’t care about other people.

Avril has stated on numerous occasions that she knows how blessed she is and that she owes her success to her fans and that she believes it is her responsibility to give back and she and support those in need and that she takes pleasure in doing so. Avril has gone out her way to help others over and over, and she has gone to great lengths to let her fans know. But the press and bloggers just keep putting her down. It is sad that she has to keep trying to overcome the negativity in spite of the fact she has demonstrated in actual deeds and not lip service that she cares about her fellow citizen. However if you believe what much of the press says about her you would think Avril is a monster. It would be nice if she could can’t catch a break, but regardless of her deed we seldom hear the good things Avril has done, I guess because is just boring to report on.

Because of the Internet the ease of producing online news and the recent explosive growth of blogging it has created a sort of competition to gain more readers at the expense of the truth. The seeming pressure to gain a greater audience that crossing the ethical line and a trend of reporting sensational headlines and fantastic stories that are so often far from truthful, that it makes it difficult to differentiate fact from fiction. This trend of generating negative headlines appears to generate so much more interest, and is so much more productive in terms of results, that the truth is often conveniently overlooked. Printing negative unsubstantiated stuff about celebrities seem to be almost a new sport these days, and sadly many people believe much of what they read regardless if its true or not. My question is the integrity of ethical reporting gone for good or the foreseeable future?

It reminds me of when I was in college and studying US history and the subject of “yellow journalism”. Yellow Journalism, in short, is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact. Moreover, the practice of yellow journalism involved sensationalism, distorted stories, and misleading images for the sole purpose of boosting newspaper sales and exciting public opinion. If you are interested just Google “Yellow Journalism” and draw your own conclusions.

Avril Lavigne Loves Her Fans
September 30th, 2007 by Heidi
Sum 41 performed at the Intersection in Grand Rapids Michigan on Thursday night and a Best Celeb Gossip reader was able to meet up with Avril Lavigne at her unofficial post-concert birthday party.
Here’s what the reader said:
After the Sum 41 concert at The Intersection in Grand Rapids on Thursday, Avril had a small birthday party in the venue with her husband and his bandmates. We were eventually able to get her a message that some of her fans were waiting with gifts for her outside and she came right out. She was absolutely thrilled with the gifts we gave her and ended up talking to us for over 15 minutes until finally Deryck told her they had to go because the tour bus wanted to leave. We asked Avril and Deryck if we could get photos with them and they were absolutely happy to do it. So we all got individual photos with Avril and then the two people I was with took photos with Deryck, but just as I was about to take my photo with Deryck, Avril started asking me what I was studying in university so I missed getting one. Then, when he came back to say they had to leave Avril asked him to take a picture with me first because I had missed getting one before! By this time I had even forgotten that I hadn’t had a photo with Deryck, but she still remembered.
I guess you really don’t know what a star’s like in person until you actually meet them. It’s good to hear that Avril and Deryck are super down-to-earth and that they appreciate their fans.

Live by the PR, die by the PR.
I think she has some problems lately that she won't be able to play off as a teenager filled with Canadian Angst...
Her latest album sales have been dismal, mainly because nobody wants to hear "teeny" songs from a 20 something.
She is talented.. but she needs to solidify her fan base before they move back to the Cheetah Girls.

urgh...how can anyone with more than half a brain cell buy into the idea that she's "lyKEE A Total1Y KeWL PunKK RawKer!!"
seriously, us people in the punk and non mainstream subcultures are doing fine. we don't need labitch or her moronic fans, and we'll be listening to our bands for years after labitch has had her last failed tour.
and for the record - she didn't "make it on her own". she's not this "totally hardcore" punk who came from nothing. her parents are wealthy, and they paid for her to have an audition with LA Reid, who realised he could use her foul attitude, and bratty behaviour to cahs in on the punk phase (thanks a frickin' bundle good bloody charlotte).
her music is lame, her lyrics are pureile, and there's not one song she's written on her own, properly. everything about her is derivative and taken from something else.
she's just another fake blonde, with as much personality as a monkey nut.
